August 1942 in New York besuchte er die h\u00f6here Schule The Albany Academy und absolvierte 1964 seinen Bachelor in Philosophie an der Princeton University, wo er 1967 zum Ph.D. promovierte. Danach lehrte er an der Cornell University und leitete sp\u00e4ter 14 Jahre lang das klinische Ausbildungsprogramm an der University of Pennsylvania und die Abteilung f\u00fcr klinische Psychologie bei der <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/\" data-lasso-id=\"2951\" class=\"blpwp\">American Psychological Association<\/a> (APA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1998 wurde er dort mit der gr\u00f6\u00dften Mehrheit der Geschichte der APA zum Pr\u00e4sidenten gew\u00e4hlt, wo er seitdem die Erforschung des menschlichen Charakters in den Mittelpunkt r\u00fcckte. Seligman ist zudem der Gr\u00fcndungsherausgeber des <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Prevention_%26_Treatment\" data-lasso-id=\"2952\" class=\"blpwp\">Prevention and Treatment Magazine<\/a> (der elektronischen APA Zeitschrift), sitzt im Beratungsausschuss des Parents Magazine und ist Vorsitzender des wissenschaftlichen Ausschusses beim Foresight Institute. In Versuchen mit Hunden konnte er zeigen, dass es Parallelen zwischen Depressionen beim Menschen und den Folgen der Hilflosigkeit der Hunde im Labor gibt.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Angenommen wird, dass Menschen, die einem unkontrollierbaren negativen Ereignis ausgesetzt sind, hilflos werden, indem sie lernen, dass keine Kontingenz zwischen ihrem Verhalten und den Ereignissen besteht. Bei dem Attributionsstil werden einem bereits eingetretenen Ereignissen gewohnheitsm\u00e4\u00dfig Ursachen (Attribute) zugeschrieben. Ein optimistischer Attributionsstil zeichnet sich durch eine internale, stabile und globale Ursachenzuschreibung im Falle eines Erfolges aus. Im Gegensatz dazu zeichnet sich ein pessimistischer Attributionsstil durch externale, instabile und spezifische Ursachenzuschreibung aus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Es besteht eine geringere Wahrscheinlichkeit, dass Menschen aufgrund negativer Ereignisse in Hilflosigkeit erlernen, wenn sie \u00fcber einen optimistischen Attributionsstil verf\u00fcgen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"color:#ddd\" class=\"wp-block-genesis-blocks-gb-spacer gb-block-spacer gb-divider-solid gb-divider-size-1\"><hr style=\"height:30px\"\/><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-modell-der-charakterstarken\">3. Modell der Charakterst\u00e4rken<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Die Erforschung des Charakters wurde zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts zun\u00e4chst aus der Literatur verbannt, obwohl der Charakter ein zentrales Thema der Psychologie war. Grund daf\u00fcr war, dass die Literatur sich nur mit \u201cneutralen\u201d Konzepten besch\u00e4ftigen sollte. Erst seit Martin Seligman 1998 als Pr\u00e4sident der American Psychological Association (APA) gew\u00e4hlt wurde, spielen Charakter und Charakterst\u00e4rken in der Psychologie wieder eine zentrale Rolle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zusammen mit Christopher Peterson definierte Seligman 2004 insgesamt 24 Charakterst\u00e4rken, die sechs \u00fcbergeordneten Tugenden zugeordnet werden k\u00f6nnen <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_11143_1('footnote_plugin_reference_11143_1_3');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_11143_1('footnote_plugin_reference_11143_1_3');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_11143_1_3\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">3<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_11143_1_3\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">Peterson, C., &amp; Seligman, M. His goal is to make the world happier. Dr. Seligman was born in Albany, NY and received his B.A. from Princeton University, Summa Cum Laude (Philosophy), 1964; Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania (Psychology), 1967; Ph.D., Honoris causa, Uppsala University, Sweden, 1989; Doctor of Humane Letters, Honoris causa, Massachusetts College of Professional Psychology, 1997; Ph.D., Honoris causa, Complutense University, Spain, 2003; and Ph.D., Honoris causa, University of East London, 2006. Durch seine Arbeiten rund um die erlernte Hilflosigkeit konnte er das Modell des erlernten Optimismus entwickeln und zeigen, dass Menschen durch Resilienztraining lernen k\u00f6nnen, eine optimistischere Perspektive zu entwickeln.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seligman fand mit seinen Forschungen im Bereich der Positiven Psychologie eine M\u00f6glichkeit, zu definieren, was Menschen gl\u00fccklich macht. F\u00fcr ihn ist wichtig, dass \u201cGl\u00fcck\u201d nicht das Endziel ist, viel mehr geht es darum, ein erf\u00fclltes Leben zu leben.
